A stroller is a necessity for any baby or toddler, but strollers, particularly travel systems, have been in the news recently for safety. Aside from travel systems, certain precautions need to be taken when using any type of stroller, as well as using the right model. In general, strollers are available in two basic types: umbrella and standard. Umbrella strollers are collapsible and have enough space for a child to sit but no storage space for a parent. Standard strollers are sturdier and offer space for a parent to hold a diaper bag and other items while out. Standard strollers have variations like jogging, double, and travel system, but all offer similar storage space and sturdiness.

One design for strollers that has come into question is a travel systems design. A basic travel system stroller combines a stroller frame and a car seat, and this allows the parent to take the child out of the stroller while keeping it in a car seat. While this is beneficial for car trips, this type of stroller design should be used as a stroller - not as a carrying basket for a baby. Put any car seat from a travel system on a hard or soft surface and the car seat may tip over. If the baby isn't strapped in correctly, he or she may become seriously injured. In general, if you want to hold or carry your baby, find a different method.

Aside from using a travel system, know when to use either an umbrella or standard stroller. In general, umbrella strollers aren't as sturdy, and parents should only put a child in one when walking on a flat surface, such as in a mall or a flat sidewalk. If you're going through grass, on a dirt path, or on a bus, an umbrella stroller won't be sufficient enough to protect a child. While a standard stroller is better in these instances, knowing how to place your child inside one is important. Toddlers, as a rule, should be in a sitting position, while babies should be placed flat on their backs.

As another rule, newborns or infants shouldn't be put in a stroller, aside from in a car seat for a travel system. Once a child is about six months old, he or she is strong enough to ride in a stroller. But, when you use any combination of these strollers, the child should be safe inside, including being strapped in properly and placed in a comfortable position.
