Is It Wrong To Buy Your Toddlers Christmas Presents At A Resale Shop?

February 272010

Do you think that Christmas presents should be brand new or is buying used toys at a great discount $3 for an easy bake oven, $5 for a disney princess keyboard, $1.50 each for a cradle, high chair, and stroller all pink plastic, a stroller, car seat, baby combo for $8 and a bassinet and baby doll for $0.50 reasonable since she is going to be 4 and her birthday is three days after Christmas. I got my son a train set for $3, a toy car for $1.75, a toy computer for $3.50 and stuff like that.
Is there any reason why I should buy brand new versus used?
It is a baby doll carseat, stroller and matching baby doll looks brand new winnie the pooh.

As long as you feel the toys are safe, why not? Your child ends up getting more for Christmas.
At this age, they are too young to know the difference. You might not be able to get away with it next year for your daughter, though.

I think its fine. If you cant afford new go ahead and do it, the kids wont notice and they will be so thankful for all the presents they are getting. If you had to buy new they would only get one versus all the things they got!! :) I would just make sure to properly disinfect them and make sure it isnt anything that has been recalled!!

There is no reason to buy brand new if the used works. The children don’t know any different. Now when they get older it will be a different story. But at this point in their life they think it is all exciting.

As long as all the items work and look like new, there is nothing wrong with purchasing the items at a resale shop. Buying new would be wonderful, but if you can’t afford it or are trying to stretch your holiday dollars, I see nothing wrong with it. Your children are very young and will be thrilled with everything that you get them.

If it’s safe and clean… then who cares. Your kids are at the age where a toy is a toy new or used. Half the time they end up playing with the box it comes in rather than the toy, lol. As they get older you may not be able to do it, as they will become more aware of stuff.

Used is fine as long as the toys are safe and clean. I do not think it matters as a child ages either. Most kids are appreciative of whatever they get (or should be) so enjoy those deals! :)

I think it is fine – since you are the mom and know what is and isn’t safe for your child. I received a second hand gift for my kid and it was obviously very used, very dangerous and very dirty. I threw it away. I have purchased some second hand items myself so there is nothing wrong with it.

I think it is wonderful. You must be a great shopper. Your children will enjoy all the things you mentioned. Things don’t have to be New to be enjoyed and appreciated— that is just a myth in our consumer society.

My only concern would be that you aren’t notified of the recalls, and that the recommended age is unknown, but using common sense and a computer I think its very saavy to shop second hand. We do a mixture and spend lots on x-mas, I feel some things aren’t worth the new price. And I think it depends on the item, not necessarily the age. Last year we bought the 7 yr old a used game boy advance for half price and with 15 free games. It was 50 dollars, and came with 15 games. We didn’t like all that it came with, and went to gamestop and traded for other games he would be interested in. He was tickled. We also confiscate the neighbors trash for great items, like last week, such as 2 fisher price bubble lawn mowers that cost 24.99 new, and we got 2 so that is 50 dollars and it was free. I also have 2 sons that are 13 months apart and are 2, and 3.

It is ABSOLUTELY NOT WRONG. In fact it’s silly to buy things new when you can buy them used for a fraction of the cost. Everything that I need I buy used when I can find it. We aren’t poor but we live on a fixed income and you cant tell from the outside. We both drive nice cars and wear nice clothes, our children have all the other things that other children have, we have a nice house with nice things and we are able to do this without ANY DEBT b/c we buy second hand on a lot of things. Of coarse use your best judgment when buying things for your children and make sure they are safe and can be easily disinfected.

It’s not wrong at all. In fact I don’t think your daughter would even know the difference and this way she can play with the things as soon as she opens them as they won’t be all tied up in the package!
